Install guide for AToM3 1) Just extract the AToM3.zip file somewhere (anywhere really). 2) Start AToM3 with either of "python atom3.py" or "python atom3NoSplash.py" If you are running linux, you can try: "atom3.sh" to save yourself from typing python If you are running Windows, you can try: "atom3.bat" to save yourself from typing python 3) You'll be asked for a directory for the User Area. This is where you'll save your new models, formalisms, grammars, and/or external tools. I recommend you create a directory NOT inside wherever you extracted AToM3.zip too. That way upgrading AToM3 to newer versions is easier, since you can easily delete the old extracted files, and just use the new ones. *NOTE: AToM3.zip contains the entire meta-modelling tool as well as many example formalisms and models. It does not contain so called "External Tools" such as the SVM statechart simulator by Thomas Feng. These can be downloaded seperately and extracted to the User Area directory in the "External" subdirectory, if needed. Minimum Requirements: AToM3 can and has been installed and used on Windows, Mac, and Unix computers. The only requirement is that Python 2.3 and Tk/tcl 8.3 or better be installed. Active developement is currently being done on Python 2.3.4 and Tk/tcl 8.4. To check your version, open a console and type "python" to start the interpreter. You should immediately see your Python version. To get your Tk/tcl version enter: "from Tkinter import *" followed by "TclVersion" A processor speed of 1 ghz or better is *highly* recommended. Upgrading AToM3 To be completely safe, delete the old AToM3 (but not your user area!) and then extract the new version of AToM3. Alternatively, just extract a newer version of AToM3 over the old one if your feeling brave (no reason it shouldn't work...). Quickstart 1) Right clicking on the canvas brings up the popup-menu, you can find everything there, including open model which you might want to do to see what has been done before with AToM3... 2) AToM3 starts with class diagrams by default. To create a class, click the class button in the top right, then either control-rightClick on the canvas or use the right-click popup menu. 3) To create associations between classes, control-leftClick on the first class, then click your way to the next class. 4) To edit a class, double click on it (or hover over it and press E). 5) When creating a graphical icon for a class, remember to give it a connector (looks like a crosshair), otherwise when you generate your formalism, you will not be able to connect the entity with an arrow. 6) You can give your class arbitrary Python code in the action/condition fields. Use this power wisely. Be warned however: the triggers that actuate said code are not guaranteed to work in all situations. 7) Once you've created a simple class model, go ahead and press the "Gen" (short for generate code) button in the button toolbar. Typically, you'll generate code in the same directory as you've saved your class diagram model (you did save it in either the Central Formalism or User Formalism directory right? You'll regret it otherwise!). 8) Restart AToM3, open your newly generated formalism, and voila, you can make models in your own well specified formalism! Uninstalling AToM3 Run the uninstall.py script to remove hidden option and temporary file folders. The main AToM3 installation directory as well as the user area will not be affected by this.
