3 Chattering in Physical Systems

In this section we study multi-mode behavior of two paradigmatic systems. The evaporator overflow mechanism exhibits chattering behavior in its hybrid system model. Similarly, collision phenomena which cause jumps in phase space (e.g., the bouncing ball), are studied using a cam-follower mechanism. The models of these systems are generalized to develop the semantics of physical system behavior at switching surfaces.
